WhatsApp's New Video Calling Feature

WhatsApp has introduced a new feature, screen sharing, to enhance the video-calling experience on its platform. This move puts it in competition with traditional video conferencing apps like Microsoft Meet, Google Meet, Zoom, and Apple's FaceTime.

The latest feature was announced by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg via a Facebook post and on his Instagram channel. It allows users to share documents, photos, and even shopping carts with contacts during video calls. Initially rolled out to some Android beta testers in late May, screen sharing on WhatsApp is accessible by clicking the "Share" icon. Users can choose to share a specific app or their entire screen, similar to the screen-sharing functionality on other video conferencing platforms.

WhatsApp stated that the screen-sharing feature is being gradually rolled out on Android, iOS, and Windows Desktop. This means that users might not immediately see the feature but can expect it to arrive soon.

In addition to screen sharing, WhatsApp has introduced landscape mode for video calls to provide a wider and more immersive viewing experience compared to the existing portrait mode. This landscape mode can also enhance the screen-sharing experience.

While WhatsApp has offered video calling for over six years, it continues to improve its services to remain competitive. Recently, the platform introduced picture-in-picture support for video calls on iOS and enabled the sharing of short video messages in chats. Video communication has become a crucial means of interaction for many users.

Screen sharing is a significant feature in video conferencing apps, even those aimed at consumers. For example, Apple introduced SharePlay to FaceTime in 2021, allowing iOS users to natively share their screens. WhatsApp has extended this feature to users on Android, iOS, and desktop platforms, showcasing its commitment to enhancing the video-calling experience.
